25-year-old charged for $0.25m theft

A 25-year-old woman of Olosara, Sigatoka appeared at the Nadi Magistrates Court.

Accused, Rosie Sharma, unemployed appeared before Magistrate Mohammed Azar charged with one count of theft.

The court heard that on January 6, at the Fexco International Foreign Exchange Nadi International Office, Sharma allegedly stole assorted currencies to a value of  $250,687.66, the property of the Fexco International Foreign Exchange.

The court heard that the accused had a job interview at the same office.

She is alleged to have seen the cash unattended and filled her bag with the money.

A staff member saw her acting suscious and reported her.

The accused was later arrested in the same office.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Parmesh Chand did not object to the bail application becaise the money was fully recovered.

She pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Azar released the accused on a $2000 bond surety, to surrender all travelling documents to the court and not to re-offend.

She will re-appear at the Nadi Magistrates Court on March 27.

Man, 31, faces court for harbouring escapee

A 31-year-old man appeared at the Nadi Magistrates Court charged with one count of harbouring an escaped prisoner.

Accused, Nacanieli Bakata, appeared before Magistrate Mohammed Azar on Monday.

The court heard that he re-offended on January 6.

The accused allegedly harboured an escapee, Amol Chand who is also in Police custody.

The accused told the court that he was used as an informant to apprehend Chand.

He claimed that Police officers had betrayed him, thus being charged for that matter.

He told the court that he did not want to return to the prison life.

Magistrate Azar asked  the accused if he had previous cases before the court and if he was serving his bail term.

He also told the accused to provide proof of his claims in writing.

Police prosecutor, Corporal Ana Mateiwai objected to bail and said the accused had previous convictions before the court.

Magistrate Azar remanded the accused at the Natabua Corrections Facility.

He will reappear on January 23 for mention.
