Dredging of River on Agenda at Nasigatoka
Public concerns regarding the Sigatoka River dredging activity will be discussed during a consultation at the Nasigatoka Village hall today. The consultation starts at 10am.
Nadroga/Navosa Provincial Council conservation officer, Lui Manuel, said this consultation would allow the public to discuss with the developers their concern regarding the dredging activity.
He said the consultation was specifically on dredging alone.
This is after residents living along the Sigatoka River vented their disappointment via social media, which has been ongoing since the dredging started.
The residents claimed that dead fish were found and heaps of baby fish lay dead along the shoreline.
Sigatoka Town Council chief executive officer, Tulsi Ram, had earlier confirmed that China Railway First Group Company Limited is the contractor for the dredging works in Sigatoka River.
Mr Ram also said that the company had begun the primary phase of the work.
When contacted for comments, China Railway First Group Company Limited, referred all questions to the Ministry of Agriculture.
In reply, an official from the company had sent a letter given by the Ministry of Agriculture.
This letter was issued by the Land and Water Resource Management Division principal engineer (River Engineering), Khim Maung Cho.
Mr Cho stated: “The conditions of contract clause 78.3 confidentiality clearly states that the contract is to treat the details of the contract as private and confidential and shall not disclose any particulars.”
Questions sent to the Ministry of Agriculture, had not been answered when this edition went to press.
