Learn to respect your wife, court tells man

Men and women have equal rights before the law and no man shall humiliate or hurt a woman’s dignity, the Nadi Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

Nadi Magistrate Siromi Turaga sent out this strong message to a man convicted of assault on his wife.

Afzal Ali of Solovi in Nadi punched his wife last year causing her serious injuries after he could not find kitchen utensils in their home.

He was charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which he pleaded guilty to.

Magistrate Turaga told Ali domestic violence was a serious offence.

He said the Domestic Violence Decree in Fiji did not have tolerance for such acts, and that a woman was not a foster to a man and her dignity must be protected.

“You must learn to respect your wife,” Magistrate Turaga added.

Magistrate Turaga told the court that in the process of the violence, Ali had lost the trust of his wife.

Ali was given a suspended sentence of two years. He was ordered not to offend and a domestic violence restraining order was imposed against him.

He is also charged with one count of criminal intimidation for which he has pleaded not guilty to.

He will appear in court for that matter on August 10.
