Navua and Suva made a good start to the New Year winning both their matches in the second round of the Vodafone Women’s senior league at the Fiji Football headquarters in Vatuwaqa. Navua thrashed Tailevu/Naitasiri 5-0 while Suva walloped Lami 4-0.

Development officer Tupua Waifune said it was a good start to the year as she could see the eagerness of the women to win their games.

“It was a good sight to see, both teams played well as they wanted a win,” Waifune said SUNsports.

“You could see that the girls were just waiting to get on the field, the interest to play was there and I think it is a good sign for us.

“This shows that women football will grow because the interest is there and the level of competition just keeps getting better.

“The teams have stepped up their performance and I could tell from watching the way they play, Rewa are the defending champions and these teams want that top spot.”

The women’s league resumed early not only to finish off the 2016 competition which was disrupted because of Cyclone Winston but to give the Under-17 and U20 girls game time as they prepare for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) qualifiers.

“The winner from the playoffs will go to the 2018 Under-20 Women’s World Cup. That is a huge thing for us and we want to give these girls as much game time as possible,” she added.
