Thank God none of my children were harmed, cried Laite Dilagi of Naduna, Labasa.

The working mother lost her three-bedroom home in a fire yesterday.

Ms Dilagi said she was shocked when she received a phone call from someone in the community that her home was on fire.

“I ran from there to my house and the first question I asked was if anybody was hurt. But they said that everyone was safe,” Ms Dilagi said.

And as she stood among onlookers she held her youngest daughter, Litiana Tinaimili, 1, and sent prayers of thanksgiving that no one was hurt.

“My children are safe and none of my family members are hurt. We lost everything in the fire, and I am satisfied that all are safe,” Ms Dilagi said.

“My two sisters in laws, two children and my mother in law were at home when the fire occurred. As soon as I came, I saw the fire, but the first thing I came for were my family members. Some of my children had gone to my neighbours’ home and some were at the farm.”

Her husband, Joti Matai, said: “What is important are the lives of people. All the items we lost can be replaced. I continue to thank God that everyone is safe.

“There are about 20 of us here at home, my wife and I, our nine children, my mother, my brother and his wife and their son and about three other children who are tertiary level.

“We are here for the sake of education, so our children can go to school and to find work. We have been staying renting here for four years.”

Usainia Nai, 44, was doing their laundry outside when she saw flames inside the house through one of the windows.

“Same time I rushed inside for my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and her two children and helped them move out,” she said.

“As soon as we got out, the fire quickly spread through the house and within minutes it was engulfed in flames. It was one of the most horrifying experiences ever.”

A team from the National Fire Authority (NFA) and the Fiji Police Force were at the scene.

NFA said investigations were underway.
