The Central Chiefs women’s rugby 7s team are looking forward to recruit more players as they prepare for next month’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament in Suva.

Chiefs senior player Iva Vocea said yesterday for the last few weeks they have worked on their new players and are using the Marist 7s tournament to expose them.

“We have been training for three solid weeks and are looking forward to getting more girls into the squad,” she said.

“It’s more likely to be our development team and are guided by our experienced players. With their help we will try to develop them and most of our girls who we are recruiting now are still in school. For those that have dropped out of school we are trying to develop them to a higher level like playing club games so they are able to improve their play and make it to the national team.

“But for now we are working on some areas especially on our fitness and from there we will concentrate on their skills and come game day we will be ready for the other teams.”

Vocea who has been playing for Chiefs for the past three years said as a senior player she is encouraged to see how the players have come together for the love of rugby.

“I started when I was in form five in 2001 and was guided by the senior players who have been part of the national team. They shared their knowledge with us the younger players then and we built on from there.

“And for this year we are aiming for the final because last year we reached the quarterfinal. We hope to better our performance and also for our young players to make it to the national team.” she added.
