Twelve families of Sabeto Village in Nadi were in high spirits yesterday after receiving electricity in their homes after years without it.

This was all possible under Government’s Rural Electrification Scheme.

The Rural Electrification Scheme was launched at the village homes by assistant Roko Tui Ba, Iosefo Vereivalu.

Sabeto resident, Sainiana Nasau, 51, was overwhelmed and grateful for Government’s support.

“I am so happy because after more than 20 years of being in the dark, we now have electricity at home,” Mrs Nasau said.

The challenges faced without electricity hindered family functions and obligations.

Mrs Nasau said the 12 households had raised around $1560 to give to the Department Of Energy as payment for the service.

However, this was refunded by Government and they only had to pay $70 for the connection fee and stamp duty.

Another resident, Lepani Matea said after three years of waiting, they were glad to finally receive electricity.

“We thank the Government for thinking about us in the rural area, and we are grateful for this initiative because our future generations will also get to enjoy the outcome of this.

“We had to pay that amount to the Department of Energy, but Government returned the whole amount – now our families can enjoy their dinner under proper lighting,” he said.

The scheme includes two tubelights with one power point in each household.

Mr Vereivalu said the Rural Electrification Scheme is an initiative by the Government and it goes through the district offices.

“A request is given with a support letter from the village headman and goes to the provincial council where it is then approved.
