The Water Authority of Fiji and the Mineral Resources Department are continuing to venture into projects in an attempt to address water issues on the southern part of Taveuni.

In a talanoa session, during the commissioning of the latest water borehole project in Navakawau Village, the WAF Regional Manager North, Apete Radrodrolagi said they had identified a new source for the larger Vuna District.

Mr Radrodrolagi said they had set their eyes on Salialevu to provide for the people in the area like Delaivuna, a large farming community before the new water source site.

While water for the area is being supplied throughWAF’s Navaca desalination plant, residents still raise concerns on its consistency.

It is understood that members of the community sometimes go without water for days at a time and they rely on rainwater to supplement their supply.

Mr Radrodrolagi said while all other water sources dried up during dry seasons and prolonged drought, the Salialevu source kept flowing.

“We have already started our survey on the area and it is in our plan that this source will provide for Delaivuna and the Vuna areas,” he said.

The Mineral Resources Department confirmed that they also had a borehole project at Qarawalu in the Vuna district.

This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources Malakai Finau during the talanoa session.
