The Telecom Fijiana 7s team should be congratulated for achieving fifth place in the USA 7s in Las Vegas yesterday.

That means the Iliesa Tanivula coached-side remained at the fourth spot of the 2016/17 Women’s World Sevens Series.

The dedication, sacrifice and commitment showed by our women should be commended.

The Fiji Rugby Union is doing all it can to lift the profile of women rugby in the country. Through its consortium of sponsors, Telecom Fiji has stepped in to back women’s 7s rugby.

However, those at Rugby House should not rest here but work on setting up a regular women’s competition in fifteens rugby as well.

This is a must so there is no to repeat of the big losses that the Fijiana XVs team suffered at the hands of Hong Kong and Japan last year.

Despite working with very limited resources, FRU could still get a regular women’s competition going.

They just need to get started as such initiative could be further backed not only by the business community but NGOs that are funded by international donors to promote gender equality in the country.
