A 15-year-old girl who was alleged to have been raped by a group of boys in Naitasiri is now residing in one of the institutes under the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar confirmed this yesterday.

Ms Bhatnagar said staff from their office in Nausori visited the complainant who was living with her parents in the village.

“Our ministry strongly condemns the alleged rape of the 15-year-old girl who allegedly ended up aborting her baby.”

Ms Bhatnagar said they have assessed the case and for the child’s safety, they have placed her in one of their institutions.

“I believe there is tension in the village and the perpetrators are still at large, so for the safety of the child and for the continuation of her education, our ministry has taken the above action,” she said.

The incident came to light after the parents of the girl found her lying outside their house following an allegedabortion.

She was five months pregnant and the baby was still-born.

The father of the girl rushed her and the baby to the Nausori Health Centre where the baby was pronounced dead.
