More than 500 women braved the pouring conditions and even flooding to attend the International Women’s Day celebrations at Labasa Civic Centre yesterday.

Chief guest, Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Mahendra Reddy applauded the women for this, saying that they deserved respect.

“I also salute you all for coming today braving the weather conditions.

“Some schools are closed but you came from all over the North because you did not come here for yourself but, for your children.

“Our women need special recognition because they work the longest hours in a day – their day begins at around 5am or earlier and ends at 11pm – and this is the most productive.

“While some of us who begin our day at 6am to 7am, the productive part ends at 5pm to 6pm, even though we may go late to bed at 1am or even 2am, the later part may not be very productive,” Mr Reddy said.

He said women needed to be recognised for their commitment to our families, society and the nation daily.

“You care about our homes, families, husbands, children, your parents, the institutions that you work for, you shoulder most of the responsibilities, you are multi-tasked, and you have to multitask because of the kinds of responsibilities that you are bestowed with.”
