A 73-year-old woman is now at peace because his son is back home safely.

Kamla Ordean of Qelewaqa, Labasa, thanked God for guiding her son, Vijendra Ordean, to safety and back to her arms.

“God bless everyone who helped my son, I am happy to see him safe and unharmed,” an emotional Ms Ordean said as she kissed the hand of her son.

“I thought I was never going to see him.”

Mr Ordean, 50, and two other fishermen, Ramzan Ali and Hirako from Soasoa, Labasa, left home on February 28. He said they had developed a battery problem while out at sea; they later anchored close to Yadua Island, Bua, before calling for help.

Ms Ordean said her prayers did not go unanswered, which has reassured her faith in God.

Mr Ordean, who had returned home on Monday night, said: “I am glad to be in the safety of my home.

“We had left on a Tuesday for Bua waters, on Saturday we fished near Yadua Island, it was later that evening when we tried to start the engine, but it couldn’t.

“We contacted the boat owner, Mr Nazrat Ali and he said he had sent the battery to one of the boats. We waited till Tuesday, but there was nothing so, we contacted him again. He said he would come by on Wednesday, telling him where we were, but when he came around, we did not meet. So when I contacted him that night, he said he had returned to Labasa and he would return later.

“I heard on the radio of the bad weather approaching so I decided to call the Police with the last few battery life. I told them of our location, our problem and for them to search for us.”

Mr Ordean said they survived on the rations in the boat, but it was the weather that worried them.

“It was all miscommunication among us, and this is not the first time for such complication, but I only called the Police because of the weather condition,” Mr Ordean said.

“Otherwise we would have waited.”

It was on Saturday that they were able to make contact again with Mr Ali after he came searching for them personally.
