Man pleads guilty to mobile phone theft

A youth who allegedly snatched a $800 worth Nokia mobile phone from another man’s ‘bra’ at Rewa Street admitted to the offence at the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Sikeli Rabuka, 21, is charged with one count of theft.

It is alleged that on June 30, 2016, at 8pm, Rabuka approached the 19-year-old complainant who was sitting at the bus stop along Rewa Street, near the crossing to Gospel High School.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Walter Taito said Rabuka allegedly grabbed the mobile phone from the complainant’s ‘bra’ and ran away with his friends.

A few days after the matter was reported to Police, the complainant identified one of Rabuka’s friends, Manueli Vakarelaba, who was with him on the night of the alleged incident.

Rabuka was arrested where he admitted to the offence.

He told Police officers during his caution interview that he had sold the phone for $70.  The case has been adjourned to April 17 for mitigation and sentencing.

Rape accused excused from court proceedings

A 61-year-old rape accused was excused from attending court proceedings unless needed because he was restricted to a wheelchair.

The accused appeared before Judge Justice Vincent Perera at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

The accused is charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. It is alleged that he raped two girls, aged nine and eight. The girls were aged four and five during the time of the alleged offence in 2013.

Defence lawyer, Karen Boseiwaqa, from the Legal Aid Commission sought the court’s permission to have the accused produced in court after the proceedings and when his presence was needed.

Justice Perera granted Ms Boseiwaqa’s request.
