President Calls For Team Effort
The Vodafone Fijian national football team presented their i-sevusevu (traditional presentation) to President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at the State House in Suva, yesterday.
President Konrote said it was a pleasure to receive the team that would be playing the New Zealand All Whites at Churchill Park, Lautoka next Saturday.
“I’m aware that this is the qualifying tournament for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia,” President Konrote said.
He said the Fiji Football performed well in the international arena with Fijian players proudly playing in the Oceania and overseas clubs.
“We are proud of this achievement. Football in Fiji is not as popular as rugby but it’s coming up, give it time,” he said.
“As Fijians we have always shown the world that we strive to compete with the big links and always attempt to ensure we stamp our mark and be recognised in any sport that we participate in.
“Be reminded that it has to be a team effort, collective most importantly that if you win, win together and if you lose, lose together and be good losers, be humble about it and learn.
“Make sure that we don’t lose too often.
“Enjoy the game by all means, set yourself some goals, always aim high and work towards achieving them.
“I send my best wishes and the nation’s blessings to 29-member team and officials to a very successful participation.”
Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said it was great to be honoured and blessed by President Konrote.
Yusuf said the President gave some motivating words to the players which was an eye-opener for them. The Christophe Gamel-coached side breaks camp today and shifts its camp to Ba before playing All Whites on Saturday at 1pm.
