The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) joined Pacific leaders, subject matter specialists and other stakeholders from the Pacific at the Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting, Hosted by the Fijian Government, for The Ocean Conference in June.

The Preparatory Meeting was held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva from 15-17 March, 2017.

“The Ocean is an important part of the Pacific and essential for the livelihoods of our people and we must ensure all measures are taken to conserve and protect the ocean for future generations,” MSAF CEO, John Tunidau said.

Pacific countries, with our low lying islands and coastal communities, are particularly susceptible to sea level rise caused by climate change. The increase in frequency and strength of natural disasters, such as Tropical Cyclone Winston which devastated Fiji, is also threat to the Pacific. Marine pollution and invasive species also pose a threat to our marine ecosystem which many people are dependent on.

The Regional Preparatory Meeting was designed to promote discussion among Pacific leaders on the unique challenges faced by the Pacific in terms of ocean conservation and present a united front at the Ocean Conference in June2017.

The High-Level segment of the Pacific Regional Preparatory meeting on the final day was chaired by Fiji’s Prime Minister, Rear Admiral Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Governments of Fiji and Sweden have the co-hosting responsibilities of the Conference at The United Nations Ocean Conference which will be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017 to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
