Lorraine Mar confirms the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) will allocate 60 per cent of the IOC funding to national teams preparation.

This includes preparing for the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas, Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan and the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu this year.

The FASANOC chief executive officer clarified the allocation of US$100K activities funding during the Olympic Solidarity Forum at the Sofitel Resort and Spa in Nadi yesterday.

The IOC has increased the activities funding from US$85K to US$100K in this new 2017 to 2020 quadrennial cycle.

“We will allocate 60 per cent of that money towards Team Fiji to help athletes for their participation costs.

“The other 40 per cent will be for conducting courses. When we took stock of ourselves in late 2015 with the consultation with the national federations, we realised we can help them by building their capacity to deliver sports efficiently.

“That is why we adopted Oceania National Olympic Committee sports education programme that will give us courses to deliver.”

There were also new programmes being introduced by IOC which was discussed during the Olympic Solidarity Forum in the past two days and one of which was the ‘athletes career programme’.

“We were very pleased with the athletes career programme this is an opportunity for us to assist athletes in their professional development.

“In Fiji a lot of athletes are not fulltime athletes. The programme will help athletes after they finish their athletic career,” she added.
