A teacher’s passion to understand why her students repeatedly made mistakes in the English language prompted her to write a book about the language.

Titled ‘Achieving Proficiency in a Second Language’ the research book by Zakia Ali Chand was launched yesterday at the Fiji National University (FNU), Nasinu Campus.

Mrs Chand is the head of school for communications, language and literature at FNU’s College of Humanity and Education.

“I constantly used to come up with errors in students’ writing and this always motivated me to find out why students repeatedly made these mistakes,” she said.

“I knew there were many factors contributing to the errors, but in my research I have focused on one main factor, which is language learning strategies.

“My inspiration to write this book came from my background as a teacher. I have been teaching English for more than 30 years.”

She thanked her family for the tremendous support during her study days.

“I can never thank my family enough and for the three years I was studying full-time, my husband supported me right through,” she said.

“I had no pressure at home to do anything whether it was cooking, washing or any household chores.

“I also had support from my academic family, my university and my lecturers, supervisors and colleagues at the university.”

She is urging other linguists and people in the education sector to read the research.

“If they want to further their study in this same topic, they should do so. This will be of great help to them to understand the reasons why students repeatedly make certain mistakes in the English language,” Mrs Chand said.

She said the research book was based on students here.

“This book will also be helpful to Ministry of Education as I have a lot of recommendations on the research piece which will benefit the teachers,” Mrs Chand said.
