Walt Smith International Limited is recognised as one of the leading sources of high quality marine life as it supplies some of the world’s market.

The director of the company and aquaculture pioneer, Walt Smith, said: “In 1998, I ran my first experiments in coral farming in Fiji and was highly enthused with the success of this pioneering effort.”

He was speaking to Minister for Forests, Osea Naiqamu, and the ministry’s permanent secretary, Samuela Lagataki, who visited his office in Labasa yesterday.

“In about the same year I also began to experiment with artificial live rock,” Mr Smith added.

“Today I have over 90,000 pieces of coral that we planted on racks in the sea and more than 100 tons of man-made live rock at on various farm sites throughout Fiji.

“I have been credited as a pioneer in this field and am honoured to be a part of an industry that I love with a passion.”

Mr Smith said his company was 100 percent Fiji-owned.

He added they exported their product to more than 30 countries, including the United States, European Union, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

“We export a variety of fish for the ornamental aquarium.

“We have two coral farms in Vanua Levu (Druadrua and Vunivutu).”

“We have spent $4 million to build our company.

“When the business is good we export about $7 million a year,” he said.

Walt Smith also has its office in Lautoka.

Mr Smith said they employed 140 people.
