Financial difficulties and the Tropical Cyclone Winston devastation did not stop Komal Lata from scoring 100 per cent in Chemistry last year.

The 18-year-old student of Penang Sangam High School in Rakiraki was one of the 38 students who were the first batch to be awarded the Minister’s Excellence Award to National Top Scorers in Science and Technology subjects in Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) and Fiji Year 13 Certificate Examination (FY13CE) for 2016.

The awards ceremony took place at the Suva Grammar School Hall in Nasese yesterday.

Komal’s father and sugarcane farmer, Hari Jan, who now works as a carpenter at Volivoli Resort said it was tough nowadays raising a family.

“I have two daughters and raising them was never easy when I am the only bread winner of the house,” he said.

“After her mother fell sick, my daughters had to take responsibility of the house to make sure everything was done and they go to school as well.

“During TC Winston, our house was blown away by the strong winds and I had to build my house to provide a secured and proper shelter for my family.”

Komal said her award was dedicated to her parents and Chemistry teacher who helped her.

“I am here today to receive this award all because of my Chemistry teacher and parents who made sure that all the resources were available for me.

“I wouldn’t have made it this far, at this stage without them.

“And likewise, I have the same dream for my younger sister to study hard and achieve better results than I did,” Komal said.
