Reddy Launches Year Nine Contest

The nine sub-themes include the subject of climate change, renewable energy and transportation, etc

The National Science and Technology Competition 2017 was yesterday launched by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy at the Suva Grammar School hall in Suva.

He said the competition was open to Year 9 students.

“There are nine sub-themes being explored in the competition. These are: Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Recycling, Food Security, Transportation, Health and Personal Safety, Biodiversity and Conservation, Environment Issues and Sustainability, Risk Reduction and Management and Entrepreneurship,” Mr Reddy said.

Five winners will be declared for each competition in each division and prizes will be awarded to winners at divisional level.

From divisional winners, one overall national winner will be selected for each competition and awarded as well.

There are four categories of competitions and these include:

  • Poster Competition – this will be individual student work, with each school submitting their best entry for the divisional level judging;
  • Model Competition – students may work in groups of 3 to 4, with each school submitting their best entry for the divisional level judging;
  • Scientific Investigation and Report Competition – students may work in groups of 3 to 4, with each school submitting their best entry for the divisional level judging;
  • Team Quiz Competition – each school will field one team, consisting of four students participating at the divisional level competition.
