Fourteen families of Ram Bhajan Ramayan Mandali gathered at Wailevu, Labasa yesterday to celebrate Ram Naumi, proclaiming the birth of Lord Rama.

The ninth day (Naumi) in the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra is referred to as Ram Naumi.

Ram Bhajan Ramayan Mandali president Kamlesh Gounder said: “The Hindu festival of Ram Naumi is the celebration of the birthday of Lord Rama, believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu,” Mr Gounder said.

“Though the day is the birthday of Lord Ram, it is believed by the devotees that offering prayers on the occasion brings health, wealth and prosperity in return.

“While many devotees who observe fast on the day, others celebrate it with offering a variety of delicacies to Lord Ram which is later distributed among the devotees.

“In our mandali on the last day of celebration, women swing the cradle with Lord Rama deity while men recite hymns to commemorate his birthday,” he said.

“Since the time our mandali was formed in 1987, we always mark this auspicious celebration with great vigour.”

Eight-year-old Shaniya Sandhika said she was excited to be present at the celebration.

“I feel very happy that my school, Saint Augustine Primary School is closed giving me a chance to celebrate this day with my family with joy,” Shaniya said.
