The fire broke out at around 9 pm and quickly engulfed the entire single-storey wood and corrugated-iron house.

All seven people were away, including a baby as the fire gutted the home and burned the roof in.

Home owner Izaz Mustafa, 35, who drives a taxi as his full time employment was away with his family at a pharmacy in town when their neighbour called him and told him about the fire.

“It is sad news for me and for my young family, we did not believe this would happen to us,” he said.

“I built this home by myself from driving a cab; we have been living here since December, 2015 as we were forced to move to this place due to flooding in our previous home.”

Mr Mustafa said he was not sure where the fire started from because some neighbours said the fire started from the front while some said it started from the back.

“Everything was destroyed except our poultry and dog who escaped when the house was on fire as he would sit on the porch,” he said.

Mr Mustafa said they had installed solar panels to beautify and light up their home at night.

He estimates the cost of damage at around $10,000.

Police said initial investigations in collaboration with the National Fire Authority were underway to determine the cause of the fire.
