Youth unemployment in the Pacific stands at an alarming 23 per cent according to a 2011 Pacific Community (SPC) report.

This was revealed during a Pacific Summit and Policy Dialogue on Youth Entrepreneurship yesterday.

The summit is a collaboration effort of the International Labor Organisation (ILO), The Commonwealth, Pacific Community (SPC) and Pacific Youth Council.

Pacific Youth Council coordinator, Tarusila Bradburgh said one of the main reason the summit was held was because of the high unemployment rate in the region.

Ms Bradburgh said they wanted to focus on youth entrepreneurship, unemployment, what areas of unemployment could be addressed and where governments could invest in.

“It’s a move for young people looking for jobs to create jobs themselves,” she said.

Over the years key development partners in the region have encouraged youth entrepreneurship as a pragmatic strategy to address spiralling youth unemployment and to positively harness young people’s potential.

About 30 participants from government ministries, private sectors, and young entrepreneurs from eight Pacific countries were part of the summit.

One of the main objective of the summit is to share national experiences and challenges faced by current and potential young entrepreneurs.

The three-day summit will end tomorrow.
