The Sukanaivalu club beat Police 17-12 during the first round of the Macuata Rugby Union club games at Subrail Park, Labasa, yesterday.

Coach Sepo Tamanisaqarua praised his players for their win against one of the toughest teams in the province.

“The union had emphasised the significance of having competitive club games with the aim to further raise the standard of rugby in the North,” Tamanisaqarua said.

“We are heading in a new direction now with players’ welfare being considered a priority.

“The club currently top the Macuata competition and such win will definitely motivate to players to work hard.”

Sukanaivalu scored three scores the Siga Veivola, Sosi Daugunu and Levi Rokociri, with a conversion from Matavesi Drauna.

Macuata Rugby secretary Alipate Koli appreciated the 12 teams that were at Subrail Park for the club games.

“But again we are inviting all teams wanting to be part of Macuata Rugby to contact the officials.

“The team from Mali had to hire a boat from the island every Saturday to come and play rugby in Labasa and this is much appreciated.

“We would be meeting next Saturday to discuss for the teams to fight for points while the ones today were friendly matches.”

Results: Tuatua 10-7 Makario’s; Nasekula 17-14 Mali; USP 8-16 Vuo
