This was not the Palm Sunday Siteri Naikarua expected: Her only son was found dead in a creek in Lautoka.

Ms Naikarua wept openly at home yesterday after she was informed of his death.

Thirty-five-year-old electrician Seremaia Vana’s body was found by people living close to the creek at Kaunitoni Street in Lautoka.

Police have not ruled out foul play and there was also a probability that he may have fallen about 20 metres into the stony part of the creek.

His sister, Mere Mara, said Mr Vana who single, came home from work on Saturday afternoon and after having his dinner went to Kaunitoni Street where he normally spent time with friends.

An unconfirmed report said he was believed to have been drinking liquor at the place where he supposedly fell in.

Ms Mara said whenever her brother went out, he usually came home around 11pm.

“He was my mother’s pet as he was the youngest and only boy in the family of four,” she said.

“If he was a bit late she continually used to check his room,”

Ms Mara said her mother checked his room at around 4am yesterday morning and seeing that he was not there became worried and felt something was wrong.

A nephew of hers was asked to go and see if he could find Mr Vana but he soon came back with the sad news for the grandmother.

Ms Mara said her brother was well-liked by all the neighbours and was a kind hearted person.

A Police source said investigations were continuing and nothing could be confirmed until after the post mortem was carried out.
