Former New Zealand Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand will officially open today’s 90th Sangam Convention at Subrail Park, Labasa.

Sir Anand, whose grandfather was a founding member of TISI Sangam told SUNsports yesterday that he was honoured to be part of the convention.

Earlier today all participating teams will march through the streets of Labasa to Subrail Park.

Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI) national secretary general Dharmend Goundar in a press conference at Grand Eastern Hotel said Labasa is hosting the convention after 15 years.

“The last time Labasa hosted the convention was in 2002,” Goundar said.

“For this convention we have secured $120,000 sponsorship from various business organisations and friends. TISI is an organisation of 6000 members.”

 

NETBALL

The Catherin Arteeka captained- Nadrala netball side are optimistic to defy all odds in the 90th Then India Mathar (TIM) Sangam Netball Championship in Labasa this weekend.

The side have been bolstered by the inclusion of Karishma Dass (defender), Shalini Pillay, Bineeta Devi, Praveena and Puspha Naicker.

Coach Judy Kumar who has been tasked for the second year running is confident to land them their fist netball title.

“We have been building up this team as, this is my second year of coach,” Kumar said.

“This year will be a different story altogether knowing that the competition level will be another notch up. The girls are optimistic of a good outing.”

Last year, they lost to eventual winners Ba in a tough semifinal clash.

The side is managed by Monisha Naidu.

Meanwhile, the organisers have confirmed that there will be eight teams in the netball and volleyball competitions as well. The games will be held at the Labasa Sangam College ground.
