Students of Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam Institute of Technology College of Nursing were reminded that they were to uphold professional conducts throughout their professional career.

Labasa Hospital manager nursing while commemorating Florence Nightingale Day at the school in Labasa yesterday, said their role as nurses were a symbol of care and devotion.

“The tradition of lighting the lamp ceremony serves as an icon in nursing from Florence Nightingale who is known as the founder of the modern day nursing,” Ms Suraki said.

“It is an auspicious occasion in every nurse’s life in reverence to the lady of the lamp.”

During the capping ceremony of 111 students, she told them: “This ceremony initiates the students into a noble profession of nursing, where adorned uniforms for the first time, the student hereafter will practice in actual medical surroundings.

“I would like to plead with this college to make every effort in ensuring that the new cadre of nurses uphold the human aspect of nursing,” Ms Suraki said.

“I am hoping that your syllabus dictates the competency of holistic approach where the components of individuals are nursed physically, socially, psychologically and spiritually.”

She encouraged nursing students to always remember that they were trained to care for human beings who have feelings – and that no technology or machine could ever replace them.

“So students, before stepping into patient care, light of wisdom and professional ethics have been passed to you to help you remember your professional conduct throughout your professional life,” Ms Suraki said.
