The Nadroga Rugby Union is expecting a much tougher Skipper Cup competition this year.

The defending champions are gearing up for the 2017 Skipper Cup opener against rivals Nadi at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka on Saturday.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Nadroga rugby coach Esala Nauga said with eight teams in the competition it would only make things difficult.

“These are the top eight teams and to play Nadi in the first game means the battle starts from there,” he said.

“We normally play Naitasiri in the first game and also we usually have a long season with twelve teams participating.

We always have a mixed results during the Skipper Cup rounds before we finally go into the playoffs.”

Nauga said for this season the Stallions have seven games and from there they have to secure a spot in the semifinal.

“In terms to defending the Skipper Cup it’s not going to be an easy road for us this year.

“That starts with our first game against Nadi.

“Nadi is not an easy team to play even if they are coming to Lawaqa.”

Nauga said all the top eight teams are geared up for this season as they don’t want to be relegated.

“For this format it’s almost like the Farebrother Challenge because it involves the top eight teams. So it’s not going to be easy for us but we are preparing for it.”

Also, the Vodafone Vanua Challenge between Lautoka and Ra will be played at Churchill Park, Lautoka on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Rugby Union will officially launch the Skipper Cup and Vodafone Trophy tomorrow at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa at the Coral Coast.
