Veteran forward out of Paris, London Sevens

Isake Katonibau will not be available in the final tournaments of the 2016/17 World Sevens Series in Paris and London next month.

The Paris Sevens is on May 13-14 while the London tournament is on May 20-21.

Speaking at the Fiji Rugby Union office in Suva yesterday, the veteran forward confirmed his unavailability but however, indicated that he is hoping to get back in the 2017/18 series.

“For the next leg I wish I could but I have to focus on other things especially on my military career as well,” the Macuata man said.

“Hopefully, if God willing I will come back next year.”

Dubbed as ‘Ice’ he strongly feels there is still loopholes in the side that needs to be fixed before the final tournaments.

“Following Hong Kong and Singapore tournaments there are a lot of things we have learnt. We have young players and they have learned how to be composed especially when under pressure. Also, we have to tighten up our defence as well. However, there are still loopholes especially in  decision making, individual assessment and we will try to improve on that.”

Katonibau acknowledged the support of families, friends and fans towards the team.

“We were unfortunate in Singapore but we would like to thank the support from the people of Fiji. “The players are young, inexperienced but there is a lot of potential in them.”

$25,000 BONUS

The national 7s team’s major sponsor Vodafone Fiji handed over a $25,000 bonus cheque to the team yesterday.

This was for winning the Hong Kong Sevens.

Receiving the cheque from Vodafone Fiji’s sponsorship manager Adriu Vakarau was Katonibau.

“Vodafone Fiji is proud once again to handover the bonus cheque for the win in Hong Kong,” Vakarau said.

“On behalf of our CEO Pradeep Lal and staff of Vodafone Fiji, we thank you for doing your country proud in Hong Kong and we are always with you either win or lose.”

Katonibau acknowledged Vodafone’s support.

“I thank Vodafone for the cheque, we are quite fortunate and I’m receiving it on behalf of the players and management as well,” he added.
