16 Teams Gear Up For Senior Battle
Sixteen unions divided into two pools in the Western and Central/Eastern/Northern are geared up for the first round of the 2017 Vodafone Vanua Championship on Saturday.
The Fiji Rugby Union with the support of major sponsors Vodafone Fiji provide each union with $15,000 participation grant for the senior teams and $5000 for the Under-20.
The first payment for the first allocation of $5000 was given to the teams following the launch of the competition at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa at the Coral Coast yesterday. The first allocation will assist the unions logistical and technical preparations for the competition.
The remaining allocations will be paid in subsequent months of May and June.
Major sponsors Vodafone Fiji sponsorship manager Adriu Vakarau looked forward to a successful journey.
“Vodafone Fiji Limited is a premier sponsor of the Fiji Rugby Union and it is our pleasure to support and launch the Vodafone Vanua Championships,” Vakarau said.
“We look forward to seeing who will be the 2017 champions and wish all participating teams all the best in their matches. Together with the Fiji Rugby Union, Vodafone Fiji Limited will continue to bring the best of Fiji Rugby to you through our networks,” Vakarau said.
Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O’Connor acknowledged the major sponsors support.
“This year we see the best 16 teams participating in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and we thank Vodafone for their continued support towards the competition,” O’Connor said.
The launch of the 2017 Skipper Cup and Vodafone Vanua Championship was conducted following a four hour rules and regulations workshop with all participating captains and team representatives from respective unions.
Warwick Fiji Resort and Spahosted both the workshop and the launch as part of a year round supporting partnership for meetings with the Fiji Rugby Union.
General manager Brad Downton reassured their support towards Fijian rugby.
“Warwick Hotels and Resorts welcome the Fiji Rugby Union and team members of the Skipper Cup and Vodafone Vanua Championship 2017,” Downton said.
“Warwick Fiji is a strong supporter of our local rugby teams and look forward to building on this with our partnership with the Fiji Rugby Union this year.”
