Three men convicted for the murder of another in 2015 were sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday.

Josaia Vusuya, Kelepi Qaqa and Tevita Dakuituraqa murdered Epineri Waqawai on July 18, 2015, at Nausori.

The trio have to serve a minimum term of 15 years before a pardon may be considered by the President.

Qaqa was also charged for the act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment to run concurrently with the murder count.

Qaqa had hit Savenaca Naitaba, the brother of the deceased on his head with a beer glass.

High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo said: “The violence used by the accused against the deceased and his brother were totally unnecessary and uncalled for.

“The brothers visited the Bridge Nightclub to enjoy themselves and instead of making the evening an enjoyable one, Qaqa began to pick a fight with Naitaba and the deceased.”

The court heard that on July 18, 2015, the deceased and his younger brother Naitaba were at the Bridge Nightclub in Nausori where they were consuming liquor and having a good time.

It was further stated that Qaqa and his two friends joined them and drank alcohol with them.

Naitaba and the deceased then decided to leave the nightclub and visit the Whistling Duck Nightclub when Qaqa confronted them outside for allegedly stealing his money.

Naitaba denied taking his money and the three parted ways.

It was stated that while they were walking, Qaqa re-appeared and punched Naitaba twice.

The court heard that the three accused repeatedly stomped the deceased on the face, chest and body and two days later he died of massive brain injuries.
