Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has appointed Patrick Bower as Team Fiji’s chef de mission to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Speaking during the press conference at the Olympic House in Suva yesterday, Bower said he was honoured with the appointment.

“I’m grateful for the privilege to serve Fiji in the role as the chef de mission to the Commonwealth Games next year,” he said.

“I’m expecting a lot of responsibilities that will come along with this role since it involves the taking of the team to a top level competition”

Bower also highlighted the importance of developing sports in the country which can attract a lot positive impact on individual athletes.

“This will be an international sporting event that will be a critical building block for the country where we will be developing the lives of the athletes who will become the leaders of tomorrow.

“We are also building national leaders through sports who will go into corporate companies to become great team players and also an important part of our communities. Sports is a very important part of our community- in fact it stands through schools which is in physical education as it goes up to secondary schools and later on in this level,” Bower said.

He said from his past experience the most difficult situation he had encountered was to keep the team together as one in a multi-sporting event.

“I would like to say that this Commonwealth Games is not going to be an easy task for me. We need to ensure that we select leaders who are able to lead in the selection criterias that is fair,” he added.

The Commonwealth Games is on April 4-15, 2018

Meanwhile, former Fiji Torch Association president Tom Toki has been appointed as Team Fiji’s chef de mission to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau, Bahamas on July 19-23 this year.
