The Vodafone Fijian Under-20 rugby team are gearing up to make a mark in the Oceania U20 Rugby Championship at the Gold Coast in Australia.

Fijian U20 coach Salimoni Ravouvou said preparations are on track.

“We’ve prepared very well for the past three months and we will be meeting the giants of rugby New Zealand, Australia and Samoa,” the former Suva coach said.

“We are aware of the level of competition expected in the tournament and it will not be an easy task for us. The reality for us is to go and narrow the gap between the other teams.”

New Zealand and Australia have included their Super Rugby players and among them is Fijian winger Jona Nareki who is in the Highlanders extended squad.

Ravouvou said they had played against top provincial teams like Naitasiri and Suva during their preparation.

FRU chief executive officer, John O’Connor said this competition is very important for the team as it will help them gauge their performance in the build-up towards the Junior World in Uruguay later this year.

“This is the first time the Vodafone Fiji U20 will compete in this competition and this is good development for the players in the long term as they work hard towards becoming a Fiji Warrior then a Flying Fijian.  I would therefore like to wish them all the best for the tournament,” he said.
