The following is a transcript of the speech by the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya at the Civic Hall in Ba at the Issuance of Renewal of Agricultural Leases on May 5, 2017.

Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources,

Senior Government officials,

Invited guests,

Lessees, ladies and gentlemen;

Bula vinaka and a very good morning to you all.

I am indeed delighted to be with you all this morning to share with you another new lease of life.

I understand that some of you may have had lingering thoughts as to the progress of your leases and whether or not it would be extended.

I trust that today’s proceedings will have put your doubts to rest as I am here to hand over your renewed agricultural leases and also to assure you personally that the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources and Government have your interests at heart, hence the renewal of your leases.

I cannot tell you enough of the importance of these renewed agricultural leases to each one of you.

You each are fully aware of the benefits derived from having your own piece of land to be used for agricultural purposes.

Need I remind you that you are obligated to utilise this land as per the set terms and conditions outlined in your agreements and I ask that you do no such thing to jeopardise the prospects of your kin in securing the same piece of land should they wish to do so in the future.

You have a role to play and please do so with honesty and integrity. The Ministry has done its part, the ball is now in your court and it is now time for you to do yours.

Bear in mind, Government has set systems and policies governing our processes, and the same is so for the approval and issuance of renewed agricultural leases.

Under these provisions, we are optimistic that long tenure of leases will foster the sustainable and progressive development of the agricultural and commercial sector as a whole.

So as you are each handed your lease agreements, please take it in good faith that this Government remains entirely committed to ensuring the prosperity of all Fijians because we are here to serve you for your benefit and the benefit of the Nation as well.

Remember that these agricultural leases are but a small piece of the larger puzzle, the onus is now on you to do with it what you have already earmarked for its implementation.

But please keep within the parameters of the agreement and see it to fruition, because you are all stakeholders in our agriculture sector and are important ones at that.

At this juncture I wish to commend you all for staying the course, in your perseverance to get your leases renewed for the sole purpose of agriculture.

In today’s fast paced society, venturing into agricultural enterprises is not at the top of everyone’s priority, but you on the other hand have experienced firsthand both its trials and fortunes and I tip my hat off to you.

Ladies and gentlemen,

With those words, it is my privilege to hand over your renewed agricultural leases as I hope that you will continue to be its good custodians and that you reap what you will sow.

Thank you very much, Vinaka Vakalevu, Dhanyavaad.
