Patiliai Leqanidruaivalu, 43, strongly believes that the society must end the blame game and work together to save lives.

“We must all take that responsibility,” he said.

In his winning Letters to the Editor, Change the Outcome, Mr Leqanidruaivalu voiced his opinion on the growing rate of death caused by accidents, suicides, poverty and many other illegal activities that happens in the hands of youths these days.

He highlighted that one of the contributing factors of such tragedies was negligence.

The full-time student of the University of the South Pacific said he felt the need to express his opinion because he noticed a lot of sad and disturbing news almost every day.

“I have been reading a lot of news in the papers and watching as well. They are news like infant deaths, suicide, and all the other tragic incidents so close to our hearts,” Mr Leqanidruaivalu said.

“I was thinking about what would be the main cause of it.

“And what came into my mind was the problem of negligence. Generally-speaking most of these incidents are out of negligence,” he said.

“My message is we cannot be ignorant. We need to look into the issues and maybe we can solve them,” he added.

As a parent, Mr Leqanidruaivalu advised other parents to prioritise their children first. And as a responsible citizen, we must take it upon ourselves to talk about these issues and look out for one another, he added.

Mr Leqanidruaivalu is pursuing studies in Diploma in Leadership Governance and Human Rights.
