Sue Utoni’s name might ring a bell from the 2013 Make it Count singing Competition where she won the last season of the show.

Sue grew up in Nasese, Suva with her parents and five siblings. Her love for music came about when she had more interest in music rather than pursuing further studies in University.

“Well music started at home, my mum is a singer and so are two of my sisters and two brothers being musicians,” said the Tailevu lass.

She started jamming with a jazz band made up of expatriates after been introduced to them by her former husband, Desmond Dass.

“This is how I actually started in the band, I actually remembered the first time I sang it was at a cocktail at the Forum Secretariat.

She said the legendary Tom Mawi was playing drums for them at the time and the first time she sang she was so nervous.

“I remember being so nervous and Mr Mawi told me to just stand and sing, that the crowd wanted to hear my voice and not the band, and so I did,” she said.

She grew up listening to artist like Helen Taylor, Andre Crouch,  Darlene Zschech, Brooklyn Tabernacle choir, Gaither vocals, Mariah Carey amongst others.

She has performed with local artist like Laisa Vulakoro, Savuto, Kiti Niumataiwalu, Tua, Mickey Niurua, Pauliasi Koroiwaca, Natalie Raikadroka, Rosie Sagaitu, amongst others.

She has performed in Vanuatu, New Zealand, Hawaii, and California, in the United States mostly doing cover songs of bands upon the request of fans and friends.

Sue is currently based in the States and is working on a few demos and just practicing for her next big break.

“I would love to meet a daring producer and a composer to bring out the music I want but until then I will be practicing,” she said.

Her advice to other artists out there is to believe in dreaming big but then if you dream big you also have to work hard.

Sue thanks her family, friends, and fan base for the support of her music journey through the years.
