The young farmers of Nadanaivalu Youth Club of Navitilevu in Ra received a timely boost from the Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou, last Friday.

Mr Tuitubou, while handing over farming tools, said: “It is the wish of Government and the Ministry to witness young people develop by maximising their land and resources.

“Government is providing incentives through such assistance to boost your investment in farming,” Mr Tuitubou said.

“The Youth and Sports Ministry is fully aware of its long-term viability and security and that is why we are providing support to young farmers.”

He said there were other associated benefits to farming especially for those in rural areas.

The Nadanaivalu Youth Club received a plough, harrow, knapsack sprayers, weedicide, manure and vegetable seedlings.

The Ministry spent more than $2000 for these items and Mr Tuitubou has urged the elders of Navitilevu “to support the positive initiatives taken by youths.

“Support from the community is vital if our youths are to progress in farming,” Mr Tuitubou said.

“We are encouraging young people to move away from subsistence farming and slowly venture into commercial farming.”

Nadanaivalu Youth Club leader Kaminieli Damedame said: “This assistance will boost the individual members and their production.”

“We are grateful to the Minister and Government for visiting us and for the great assistance especially when we are still recovering from the aftermath of TC Winston,” Mr Damedame said.

He added that the visit by the Minister for Youth and Sports was also timely and was a great opportunity for them to discuss issues pertaining to their development.
