When discrimination begins in the most intimate spaces of our lives, it has the potential to really devastate one’s ability to enjoy the inherent human dignity.

This were words by director of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission,  Ashwin Raj, during a press conference to launch a video on the rights of the Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Persons.

The launch coincided with the worldwide celebration of International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia yesterday.

The theme this year is ‘Love Makes a Family’.

“We wanted to send out a message to the people of Fiji about the importance that families play in all our lives including members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

“What we wanted to do was to talk about the fact that we still have discrimination despite the sultry provisions in the constitution under the political grounds of discrimination that one cannot be discriminated against on the grounds of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.”

The one-minute educational video has been televised on Fiji TV and FBC TV.

In the next month, the Commission will be releasing a series of similar educational videos targeting discrimination which include racism, disability rights, child rights and more.
