In an attempt to also earn for her family, Ingra Devi sells at the Labasa Market every Saturday.

The 49- year old market vendor who resides at Nakama in Labasa said their main source of income for the family came from her husband’s sugar cane farm.

She said to lighten her husband’s burden she decided to be a market vendor to sell the produce from their vegetable garden.

“I have been selling at the Labasa Market for the last nine years and I love it,” she said.

The mother of two said she earned a respectable amount during her trips to the market raking in the much-needed cash for her family especially for her younger daughter who was studying at the Fiji National University Labasa campus.

What sets this woman apart from most of the vendors is that she plants her own crops instead of buying from others.

“I plant cabbages, a variety of beans, cucumber and so on.” She said she had been able to send her children to school.

“One who is now working in Sigatoka and my younger daughter is at FNU in Labasa.”

She said the money from the sugarcane farm also helped financially in education and food necessities for their family.

According to Ms Devi selling on Saturday is good as many customers come to buy their groceries in supermarkets and visit the market for to buy food crops, vegetables, fruits etc.

She said she had many customers and she always served them well.

Saturday too according to Ms Devi is always fun and interesting as she always meets with new customers at her table.
