Jack’s Qaqa Nadi goalkeeper Vereti Dickson’s incredible saves gave the Vodafone Fiji Fact defending champions their first win at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday.

Dickson was the star of the show as he was on form making crucial saves to keep Ba from scoring in the 3-1 victory.

“It was a good game, Ba was a really tough and they kept me on my toes throughout the whole game,” Dickson said.

“Personally I do not feel any pressure as most would. When I’m out there on the field. I trust my teammates completely and know that they will do their best. When you have good teammates you do a good job.”

Coach Babs Khan said though they have an incredibly young side, Nadi played to their strengths which was their set pieces.

“Our strengths if you have seen in the past is our set pieces, we spend a lot of time perfecting it and it benefited us in the end,” Khan said.

“We have an extremely young side and they are still learning, for them to come out and perform the way they did against a top side like Ba really shows their potential.

“We still have a lot to work on, the reason why we won is because we took advantage of situations and Ba didn’t.

“The tournament is not over yet, we still have games to play and we need to forget about this win and focus on those games.”

Meanwhile, Ba Coach Imdad Ali said

“The first match is always difficult, Nadi utilised the set pieces and we didn’t and that resulted in goals,” Ali said.

“It is only the first match, we still have a lot to do and we need to be more competitive in the game because we have other games coming up, so we will take each game as it comes.”


What happened?

Ba took charge in the first half denying Nadi the ball and applying pressure on their defence. Shot at goal in the 20th minute from Ba’s Saula Waqa was well defended by Nadi goalie Vereti Dickson. Nadi found it hard to settle down as they continued to fumble with the ball giving Ba the opportunity to have attempts at finding the back of the net. Nadi kept up with Ba and played the ball smartly as Waisake Tabucava scored the first goal to put the Jetsetters in the lead, 1-0.

Frustration kicked in for Ba as Narend Rao made an attempt at goal but the ball was way off. Constant pressure on the Nadi defence in the box made them slip up which earned Ba a penalty kick.

Ba’s Malakai Rakula tied the scores up at halftime, 1-1.

Nadi kicked off the second spell with a goal from as corner kick as Napolioni Qasevakatini headed it in to extend Nadi’s lead, 2-1.

Four minutes later, Nadi again took advantage of their position inside the box as Rusiate Matarerega scored a goal for the Jetsetters, 3-1. Ba’s numerous attempts to score a goal were shut down by Nadi’s good defence.


Big play

Despite getting off to a slow start, Nadi took control in the second half scoring two goals.
