The India-Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference (IPI-SDC) conference will begin next week to enhance co-operation between Indian and Pacific Island countries.

The two-day conference was put together by the Indian High Commission, the Pacific Island Development Forum (PIDF) and the National Disaster Management Forum.

The conference hosted by the Indian government and supported by our Government, will be attended by 14 Pacific Island countries to discuss issues such as the ‘blue economy’, adaptation mitigation for climate change and disaster preparedness.

The blue economy is defined as a new paradigm in the development discourse which gives equal weight to economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The conference will be hosted by the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, General Dr Vijay Kumar Singh (Ret’d) commencing on May 24 and 25 at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Vishvas Sapkal, said the two day conference is expected to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience and initiate partnerships and collaborations for the benefit of all participating countries.

“India and the Pacific region faced similar challenges in terms of natural disasters.

“We face same challenges such as floods, droughts, cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes.

“So ways to tackle these challenges will be discussed during this conference by national disaster agencies,” Mr Sapkal said.
