Shameera still hopes for ‘A Cleaner Fiji’

Shameera Shaheed, 20, of Samabula, Suva strongly believes that a society must work together to end careless rubbish disposal on our roads.

She wrote a Letter to the Editor to the Fiji Sun, titled – A Cleaner Fiji – after she kept seeing people littering.

She said people throwing rubbish on our roads was damaging the environment.

“We are all responsible for that.”

The University of the South Pacific student said she felt the need to express her opinion because she noticed a lot of people had made littering a habit.

She said that every time she had to traveled from Nadi to Suva, she would see drivers and passengers throwing their rubbish out of the moving cars or buses.

They include cigarette butts, packets, plastic bags, old tyres, fast food wrappers, plastic, glass bottles and more.

She urged youths to raise their voice about this kind of behaviour.

It was her first Letter to the Editor, and as Letter of the Week winner, she has been motivated to write more.

She also encouraged her other university friends to talk more on important issues happening around them through this column.
