A China and Fiji’s relationship continues to strengthen, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism signed a Memorandum Of Understanding  with the China Council for Promotion of International Trade  (CCOPIT) in Beijing.

“The MOU being signed will enable different businesses from across various associations to benefit from the vast areas of cooperation especially the small and medium enterprises in Fiji,”said Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, permanent secretary Shaheen Ali.

“The objective of the MOU is to further recognise and establish friendly and cooperative relations, supporting the trade and investment promotion activities of each party.

“And we believe that with investments is the conduit to enhancing trade and the flowing of technology and knowledge,” said Mr Ali.

Alongside the trade benefits that the MOU encompasses, a Joint Council will be formed as the mechanism for an annual working meeting.

This Council is a designated special team which will coordinate cooperation and review and evaluate the cooperation between the two countries

“Total trade between Fiji and China has increased from $369.7 million in 2011 to $841.5 million in 2016.”

The value of investments from China has increased from $106.1 million to $637.5 million since 2011 to 2016, said Mr Ali.

“We believe there is a direct link between investments by Chinese nationals and increase in exports to China.”
