Six Fijian Navy personnel have gained more skills in diving after they graduated yesterday from the eight-week defence divers course at the Togalevu Naval Base.

They were Able Seaman Salesh Lal, Ordinary Seaman Iosefo Dau, Ordinary Seaman Pateresio Ranuku, Ordinary Seaman Silivano Gasau and Ordinary Seaman Vilitati Tamani.

Course instructor, Warrant Officer 1 Ilisa Tuira said they had been instilled with senior diving instructor roles.

He said it made sure that the trainees attained the standard required of them as divers.

The course, Warrant Officer Tuira said, was conducted in accordance with the Diving Book of Reference.

He said it would also ensure the general safety of the trainees.

Fiji Navy Lieutenant-Commander Ledua Yaco reminded his men to carry out the roles bestowed on them to the best of their ability.

He said the Fijian Navy was one of the Government’s forefronts when it came to deployment.

Lieutenant-Commander Yaco said they were the only entity available to Government in terms of diving.

Able Seaman Salesh Lal said first few weeks of training was a struggle, but through believing in God he managed to overcome the challenges.

Originally from Labasa, he said he also took the same course in Malaysia and Australia.

“Being a diver, one should be very careful of how they will handle themselves; one wrong move can destroy everything.

“I joined the Fiji Navy in 2009. Till today, I haven’t regretted that decision and the trainings we had to undergo in order for us to bring out the best in us,” he said.

He said they also learned the skills of dealing with explosives and mine counter measures.
