The name of a proposed new party has been registered with the Fijian Elections Office (FEO).

It is called the proposed Unity Fiji Party.

Members of the proposed party are part of a new political movement comprising intellectuals and professionals who say they are dissatisfied with the current political climate and public discourses on issues. Two of the prominent people linked to the proposed party are Adi Sivia Qoro, a former pioneer of the People’s Democratic Party, and Savenaca Narube, a former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji. Former ambassador Kaliopate Tavola has also been linked to the new party.

Adi Sivia, in an earlier interview with the Fiji Sun, had revealed that the movement had gained momentum. She said they had done their homework and found that some people wanted an alternative party to articulate their issues.

It is understood that members of the movement were not happy with the level of political debate because they said it lacked intellectual input.

It is also understood the proposed party aims to offer an alternative for undecided voters who are unimpressed with the existing political parties.

Recently, 151 SODELPA members resigned from the party, to join the proposed Unity Fiji.

The proposed party is currently collecting signatures for the 5000 required by the FEO before it can be registered.
