Five generations of descendants yesterday commemorated the 102nd birthday at Latchmi Mudaliar’s home in Korovuto, Nadi.

Ms Mudaliar celebrated her birthday (born May 7, 1915) with family including her five children who were by her side as she cut the three-storey birthday cake.

“I would also like to celebrate my birthday and it is great to see all my extended family present here,” she said.

Ms Mudaliarwas born in Nadrala, Sigatoka.

Her father was Kumar Sami, and her mother was Amniamma who came from India during the indentured labour period.

She was the eldest of three sisters and four brothers, her youngest brother passed away about two months ago.

Those present by her side were daughters Kamachi Reddy, 85, Kaushaliya Reddy, 83, Muthamma Reddy, 69, and Ponamma Reddy, 58.

Raja Ram Reddy, 64, was the only son present. Her other, son Permal Reddy, 67, lives in Papatoetoe, NZ, and could not make it to the party.

“My wedding was carried out by pundit, the late Devi Charan (Arolevu, Nadi). I was married at the age of 13 to Murgesan Reddy, of Tunalia,” she said.

“During our days the groom does not take the Bharat (wedding party) it was the bride. We use to travel on the passenger (pronounced for a train that was facilitated by the CSR Company back then for free transport) as there were no cars at that time.

“We arrived at the groom’s home and we would play games and jokes the whole night and jokes and the wedding were held after midnight when the stars are shining and the next sun rise was expected.”

She gave birth to her first child two years after the wedding.

Her husband passed away in 1970.
