There is usually no congestion at the Suva Port, says the Fiji Ports Terminal Limited (FPTL) chief executive officer (CEO) Hasthika Bandara Dela.

He was responding to a query sent by the Fiji Sun regarding the oil tanker Chang Hang Xing Yun which arrived on May 20 and berthed on May 22.

Campbell’s Shipping Agency spokesperson Anare Keni said due to congestion at Suva Port the oil tanker would berth on May 22.

“It arrived to Suva on May 20 but due to congestion at Suva Port it will berth on May 22,” he said.

Mr Dela while confirming that the oil tanker was at Suva Harbour said it was not berthing due to port congestion.

“This happened as a result of bunching up of vessels.”

He said the Fiji Port Terminal Limited arranged berthing of vessels according to the prevailing National Legislation in place.

Vessels he said would have priority on berths as shown under “Berth Priorities” based on a “first in” booking basis.

He said the liner container vessels arrived Suva on fixed schedules, were provided with berthing facilities.

Mr Dela said they had many times requested Tanker Vessel Operators to schedule their arrivals to Suva by avoiding week-ends to avoid bunching up with fix day cargo vessels.
