William Waqanibaravi, better known as Bigwilz (nickname from his army days), was raised in Nadroga by his maternal grandparents from when he was just three months old.

Bigwilz lived in one of those big colonial homes in the hills in Nadroga where his grandfather ran a quarry.

“I’ve been hooked on music as far as I can remember, I was on my own most of the time and the only companion was the radio and it’s where my love of music began,” said the Oneata, Lau, native.

His viral music video “Coconut Bubbling” garnered a following on social media with over 46,000 views came about during a jam session with his fellow musicians.

The video was produced by Guru Media.

“Coconut bubbling came to mind at that moment I was thinking happy thoughts and how we as islanders are labeled as coconuts by Kaivalagis,” said the Nadi-based artist.

Bigwilz’s music career started in 2006 when he met Simi Rova and later was part of the popular band Makare in 2013.

He also plays the guitar.

He has grew up listening to Gaunavou Group, Torokina Serenaders, Daniel Boone, and Jimmy Cliff after a cousin gave him his tapes collections amongst others.

“Being able to rub shoulders with all these super talented personalities and to be considered a peer, 10 years ago I wouldn’t have dreamt I would be picking up George Fiji for dinner or having coffee with Tom Mawi.”

He said balancing family, work, and music had been challenging but he had learnt to put things in perspective.

His performed with George Fiji Veikoso, Victor Rounds, Tom Mawi, Nesbitt Hazelman, Kuki Nayacakalou, Niko Bulai, and David Stevens amongst others.

“My wife is my greatest inspiration, she keeps me grounded and always gives me good advice and musically George Veikoso is an inspiration.”

His advice to other artists out there is “if it’s your calling, stick with it and be disciplined in the art.

“Respect it and it will reward you.”

Bigwilz has just completed his solo album titled “Outside the Box” and has 10 originals including Coconut Bubbling and will be released in July.

When he feel like jamming you can catch Bigwilz at the Hard Rock Café, Nadi, with Simi Rova and Fiji Fusion or if he is in Suva with One2Eight.
