The people of Navuniivi in Ra, put on a feast for a worthwhile cause yesterday.

It was a moment to cherish and a day of thanksgiving as the family of Vodafone Fijian 7s rep Paula Dranisinukala celebrated the fact that he is the first from his village to become a national rugby rep.

He made his debut in the last leg of the 2016-17 World Sevens Series in Paris and London earlier this month.

Dranisinukala was accorded the vakamamaca (traditional welcoming) ceremony as his family and relatives welcomed him back at his family house in Kinoya, Nasinu.

And the gentle giant rated by Vodafone Fijian 7s coach Gareth Baber as one of his players for the future, was overwhelmed.

“I am very grateful to be the first man from  Navuniivi to be a national rugby rep,” Dranisinukala said.

“Playing sevens rugby is nothing new to me as I have been playing this sport since primary school. But playing for the first time in the international arena was quiet challenging for me as the atmosphere was new and the experience was totally different.

“I need to recover and rest properly before our off-season starts in two weeks.

“I want to continue improving my performance especially my fitness since I am aware of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco next year.”

Dranisinukala applauded his family for their endless support.

“I would like to thank my family members from the village who have turned out in numbers to traditionally welcome me back.

“It’s a unique occasion and I’m immensely proud to be blessed by your own people and be given a special treat.

“This has motivated me to strive for excellence in my game. Like all Fijians, I’ve a lot to play for; my family, my relatives and all the people of Fiji.”
