Fiji’s commitment to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015 – 2030) was reaffirmed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development Permanent Secretary, Meleti Bainimarama, while recently attending the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun, Mexico.

Mr Bainimarama spoke at a Plenary Session on the “Coherence between the Sendai Framework, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and Climate Change.”

He said Fiji, he said, was shifting from a culture of reaction to a culture of prevention, directing more effort and resources toward preparedness than response which was at the heart of the Sendai Framework.

“At country level, Fiji earnestly supports and is committed to the shift from disaster management to disaster risk management, he said.

“For Fiji, the call to action is real and necessary.”

Mr Bainimarama also shared Fiji’s experiences of resilience after Tropical Cyclone Winston and deliberated on Fiji’s disaster risk management initiatives, which included the development of disaster related legislation and roles; the development of a National Relocation Guideline; annual budgeting for risk reduction infrastructural projects; gender inclusive initiatives; alignment with the ‘build back better’ strategy; and the development of the Fiji National Cluster System and the National Humanitarian Policy.

Over 5000 participants, including world leaders, were present at the Global Platform in Cancun.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) was adopted in 2015 by 187 nations at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan.

The Sendai Framework outlines seven clear targets and four action priorities which should lead to significant reduction in disaster risks and losses in lives, health, and livelihoods.
